Do you have to record your fire alarm tests?

The quick answer to this question is yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the overarching legislation covering fire safety and, within this, it states that you must be able to evidence the monitoring of your fire safety processes.

Why are fire alarm tests needed?

As well as your mandatory twice-yearly fire alarm services, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, you’re legally required to run weekly fire alarm tests too – this is covered under Article 17.

Running weekly fire alarm tests is an integral part of your business’ fire safety set-up, and is a simple way of ensuring that your devices sound as they should in the event of a fire. In addition, it ensures everyone within your business’ premises knows how the alarm sounds if the worst happens.

What do you need to record?

For each fire alarm test you complete, a competent person should record – in writing – the following information:

  • The date the test was completed
  • The time the alarm sounded
  • How long the alarm ran for
  • Any faults uncovered during the test
  • Remedial action taken to repair any faults.

As well as recording the above points following your weekly fire alarm test, you must also document:

  • The date and time of any instances whereby your fire alarm is disconnected
  • The date and time any alterations are made to your alarms
  • Any evacuation drills that are completed using your alarm system.

What happens if you don’t

If you’re unable to provide an enforcing authority with evidence that you continually monitor your fire detection systems, you may find yourself facing an improvement notice or an advisory from your local fire service; that’s the best scenario.

The worst case scenario is that a fire breaks out and your early detection systems don’t activate – which could cause fatalities.

Fire alarm servicing

Weekly fire alarm tests are one part of maintaining your fire alarms, regular servicing is the other. By law, every single business must make sure a competent person services their fire alarms at least twice a year.

By competent, we mean someone who holds relevant training and qualifications, and has the experience, capability and attitude to carry out the task at hand.
